Dimitria Festival 2025- I want to see the Pope!

In this work, which sparked intense reactions when it premiered in 1920, Theophrastos Sakellaridis’ thematic universe unfolds to the fullest. The composer also signs the libretto, which is a local adaptation of Maurice Hennequin’s farce Domestic Bliss (1894), featuring a newlywed bourgeois couple whose relationship is disrupted when, during their honeymoon in Rome, the young wife expresses a desire to see the Pope up close!

Style, language, characters, music, and rhythm reveal a captivating theatrical world where hypocrisy, exaggeration, pretentiousness, and the uncritical idealization of certain social institutions are masterfully satirized.
