in the Collection of Contemporary Art of Polly and Christos Kollialis
The collection of Polly and Christos Kollialis became widely known thanks to its authority in the field of Greek naïve painting. It was shaped by Stelios Lydakis’ research on Greek naïve painters and further enriched by the ability of Polly Kolialialis, who is the mastermind of the collection, to detect obscure artists.
However, Polly Kolliali’s restless and multifaceted personality is best captured in another section of the collection, that of contemporary art. Here, her unconventional character, her subjective view and her courageous choices result in a charming, cool set of works with a focus on young visual artists.
In this exhibition, a very limited but representative subset of the collection, young visual artists interact with iconic artists. Works from different eras and styles form a surprisingly interesting, anarchic whole. As the curatorial intention is to underline the characteristics of the collection, a deliberate accumulation, like an art collage, was adopted. The result is an open exhibition, which pushes the viewer to rely solely on his or her own ability to perceive and evaluate. An exhibition that aspires to function as a field of observation, free associations, meaning-making and interpretation of visual stimuli.
