STATE ORCHESTRA OF THESSALONIKI Opening Concert 2025-26
The State Orchestra of Thessaloniki begins the new artistic season with part of the program that will be presented a few days later during its historic debut at the famous Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna.
The State Orchestra of Thessaloniki commemorates the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death with the bright and emotionally rich Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70, conducted by the legendary maestro Thomas Sanderling, a close collaborator and friend of Shostakovich, who recognized his talent from the moment he first saw him conducting.
The award-winning young Austrian cellist Jeremias Fliedl will perform Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the most significant work of the great Russian composer for the cello. Fliedl will perform it with his “Gendron, Lord Speyer” cello, made by Antonio Stradivari in 1693. The program begins with the brilliance of Dodecanesian Suite No. 1 by Giannis Konstantinidis, one of the most famous and characteristic works of the Greek National School, which captivates with the rhythms and melodies of traditional songs from these beautiful islands.
