Thessaloniki Takes Part in First World Sports Tourism Congress

    “Sporting events can accelerate tourism development if used successfully for the brand development of a destination,” Thessaloniki Tourism Organization President Voula Patoulidou said during 1st World Sports Tourism Congress which took place in Lloret de Mar, Spain, 25-26. November.

    Organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Catalan Tourism Agency (ACT), the Congress focused on the sector’s unique capacity to promote sustainable and inclusive development, diversification and public-private partnerships.

    Referring to sports tourism as a fast-growing sector, Patoulidou presented the sporting experiences offered to travelers in Thessaloniki, as well as the major sporting events that take place in the northern port city each year, including “Alexander the Great International Marathon” and International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon.
