Loreena McKennitt Live in Thessaloniki at Earth Theatre

Thessaloniki welcomes the absolute muse of world/ethnic/folk music, the Canadian Loreena McKennitt, at the Earth Theatre in June 2024.

30 years- “The mask and the mirror”

The beloved artist of the Greek audience, comes to enchant the audience of Northern Greece, with her unimaginable talent and magical voice, five years after her previous, unforgettable performance.

Having won many awards in her career, having sold tens of millions of records and experiencing tremendous success from all corners of the globe, Loreena McKennitt comes again to the country that adores her like few other artists.

This time, she will be visiting us as part of a very special tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her monumental and groundbreaking album, “The mask and the mirror”.

During the tour, favorites from throughout McKennitt’s career will be played, which are expected to captivate audiences, but will also offer fans the opportunity to experience a rare experience of being treated to the entire “The mask and the mirror”, accompanied by exceptional, as always, musicians.

Her musicians:

Caroline Lavelle on cello,
Brian Hughes on guitar,
Hugh Marsh on violin,
Dudley Phillips on bass and
Robert Brian on drums

This album, the fifth in her discography, was released in 1994 and was acclaimed by audiences and critics all over the world as a cross-cultural masterpiece, drawing inspiration from Celtic music, the troubadours of France, the pilgrims of Andalusia and Galicia and the musical traditions of Egypt and Morocco.

“The mask and the mirror” is a milestone in the otherwise brilliant career of this gifted artist, which has captivated her large audiences with its timeless melodies and profound lyrical themes.

Let’s not forget that this album also features Loreena McKennitt’s ultimate breakthrough to the Greek audience, the song “Marrakesh night market”.

Among other things, we must not forget that Haroula Alexiou has made one of her biggest hits by successfully covering “Tango to Evora”, as “The Tango of Nefeli”, and also “Kiss me, kiss me”, which is “Marco Polo”.

Loreena’s relationship with Greece doesn’t stop there though. Apart from the fact that she is one of the few artists of the international repertoire who have managed to have gold records with their sales in our country, she uses Greek traditional instruments and collaborates with Greek musicians not only in her recordings, but also in her concerts.

Her live album, “A Mediterranean Odyssey”, features recordings from her first visit to Greece in 2009.

When one wants to talk about Loreena McKennitt’s accomplishments in her rich career, it takes a lot of time, since besides playing harp, piano and accordion, she is a composer and lyricist, producer herself, but she also has her own record label, Quinlan Road, making every DIY artist’s dreams come true to the highest degree.

In addition, she has written music for movies and TV series, has received numerous music awards, as well as honors such as being inducted into the Order of Canada and being named a Doctor of Law and Literature.

Her philanthropic work and interventions on issues related to global climate change, citizen democracy, and also her humanitarian stances against tech giants and the indiscriminate use of social media are also rich.

On the evening of 27 June 2024, the skies of Thessaloniki will overflow with intoxicating melodies, of Celtic music with a Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Celtic flavour.

A mystical night on the stage of the Earth Theatre with world music from the ultimate priestess of the genre. Loreena McKennitt.
