THE FINAL APOLOGY OF NIKOS KOEMTZIS

“The drowned man was born at the bottom of the sea and struggles to get out until he breathes again until he is dragged down again. I’m not blurred. I’m drowned, I tell you. Now I can say it.”

Nikos Koemtzis went down in history as the man who on Halloween 1973 killed three and injured seven others “for an order” in an Athens nightclub. In the first play about the case that shocked Greece, Koemtzis makes a wish as he passes away on his book bench in Monastiraki: that he be given the chance to tell his story one last time. Not to investigators and prosecutors, but in front of everyday people.

What armed Koemtzi’s hand? What defined his soul and mind until the massacre? How thin is the line that separates good from evil and normal people from monsters? The monologue “The Last Apology of Nikos Koemtzi” attempts to approach the unprecedented crime through a retrospective look at the hero’s turbulent life and the historical events that sealed it.
