The Antiquities Of Thessaloniki Metro

Info

The Thessaloniki Metro route mirrors the ancient city’s main streets, which were once lined with colonnades and arcades, featuring a 16-meter-wide pavement. It stretched from the Golden Gate (now Vardariou Square) to the Kassandriotiki Gate (today’s Syntrivanios Square).

During metro construction, significant archaeological finds from various periods were uncovered near these historic gates, which once bordered the city’s cemeteries. Excavations at Venizelos and Aghia Sophia stations, located in the heart of ancient Thessaloniki, have also revealed important discoveries.

Covering 20,000 square meters, this is the largest excavation ever in Northern Greece, with 130,000 artifacts unearthed and a budget of €132.6 million. At Venizelos Station, work to preserve and relocate the finds is already underway.
