The synagogue, a donation by Ida Aroesti with further financial contribution by families from Monastiri (Vitola) former Yugoslavia, was founded in 1927. During the Nazi occupation, it was the heart of the ghetto established in the centre of Thessaloniki. When the Jewish population was transferred to the concentration camps, the synagogue was used by the Red Cross as a warehouse, thus it was preserved and remained in a good condition. It is fully operating up until today, serving the religious needs of the city’s Jewish community.
