It is a multi-purpose sports arena covering an area of 106.534m². The main Stadium of 30.000 seats approximately, hosts athletic and football events. It was built in the 60’s and due to its comprehensive renovation for Athens Olympics 2004, it hosted the football pre-semifinal and semifinal games.
It is used by most the sports athletic clubs of Thessaloniki, both for training purposes and games. It is a fully equipped and modern stadium, and hosts very significant national and international events, European meetings and World championships.
Its football field is the home of IRAKLIS football team, very popular among the Thessalonians, that won the Greek Cup in 1976 and the Balkan Cup in 1985. Vasilis Hatzipanagis, was one of its top players who was called to play for WORLD XI. During WW II IRAKLIS’ athletes participated in the Greek resistance and helped at the liberation of Thessaloniki (some of their letters are kept at the team’s archives)
Kaftanzoglio Stadium is also used by the Aristotelian University, Department of Sports and the Military Academies.
It frequently hosts art events and concerts, sports conventions and day conferences.
