From Minoan Art to the Modern Era: Exhibition at the Casts Museum of the Aristotle University | School of Philosophy

An exhibition titled “A.U.Th. Casts Museum and the Gilliéron Workshop: A Century of Creative Collaboration” is organized by the Casts Museum of the Aristotle University, in Rooms A and B on the basement level of the new building of the School of Philosophy.

According to the organizers, the exhibition is an innovative project resulting from the creative partnership between the Casts Museum of the Aristotle University and the Gilliéron Archive of the French School at Athens.

At the heart of the exhibition are groups of objects displayed at the Casts Museum that were acquired at the beginning of its operation (1928–1930) from the workshop of the artists Émile Gilliéron, father and son, in Athens—purchased thanks to the efforts of the University’s first Professor of Classical Archaeology, Konstantinos Romaíos. These include painted works copying well-known frescoes and electrotype replicas of Mycenaean and Minoan art—constituting one of the few complete collections of this kind worldwide today.

Additionally, during the same period, many casts of Archaic sculptures (Korai, Kouros statues, and reliefs) were purchased—among the earliest produced by the Plaster Workshop of the National Archaeological Museum.

The exhibition includes numerous replicas and casts of works of ancient art, as well as unpublished archival and workshop materials and visual documentation (workshop remnants, publications, photographs, drawings, projections) from the fields of Archaeology (Prehistoric, Classical, and Byzantine), Art History, Modern History, and Digital Applications.

The exhibits are presented throughout the spaces of the Casts Museum and cover antiquity from the Mycenaean and Minoan eras to the Roman and Byzantine periods, and for the Modern Era up to the first half of the 20th century.
