Founded in 1926, it is the largest university in Greece. It covers all the educational fields and it is widely recognized as an active learning centre based on a long academic tradition of excellence. It comprises of 11 Faculties and 41 Departments, with 74,000 students (65,000 undergraduates, 4.764 post-graduates and 4,140 of Doctoral level, 2,025 teaching and research personnel, 508 assistants and 674 administrative staff).

The university premises are located at the main campus, as well as, the campus of Thermi. The main campus is located in the centre of the city and covers an area of approximately 387.000m2. The School of Visual and Applied Arts and the School of Music Studies of the faculty of Fine Arts, as well as the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences are housed in facilities located in Thermi. Due to operational and practical purposes a part of university faculties, institutions, museums, laboratories and various facilities are located outside the main campus or even outside Thessaloniki. The University Summer Camp in Kalandra Halkidiki offers students relaxing holidays after a tiresome academic year.

Undergraduate Studies

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki offers 41 Undergraduate study programmes that respectively lead to 1st cycle degrees. The minimum duration of studies is eight to ten semesters, and twelve semesters for the Medical School.

Postgraduate Studies

There are 88 Postgraduate Programs, including 3 in collaboration with other universities in Greece and abroad, and 16 Inter-departmental, 3 in French, and 15 in English. Moreover, the Aristotle University has signed 28 Special Protocols of Collaboration with foreign universities for the co-tutoring of Doctorate Dissertations.

The Aristotle University Internationally

The international role of A.U.Th. is supported, among other factors, by the vast experience in many academic fields such science, arts and divinity, medicine and technology. Most of its academic personnel have been trained in reputable Universities throughout Europe, the United States, Australia and Japan. The University has been actively participating in the Erasmus Programme since 1987, accounting approximately one fourth of the total Erasmus mobility of Greece in the frame of Student for Studies Mobilities as well as Staff for Teaching Mobilities

The Department of International Relations and the Department of European Educational Programmes are responsible for enhancing, organizing and maintaining good relations between the Aristotle University and the international academic community, as well as for promoting the university abroad, with the aim to reinforce cooperation and communication in the field of teaching and research.

The above goals are met by participating in international Organizations, Unions and University Networks,coordinating and implementing Bilateral Agreements between AUTH and universities all over the world, as well as by implementing the European Policy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki through the ERASMUS+ programmes and various other European Educational Programmes (Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus+ International etc.).

The UNESCO Chair of Education of Human Rights, Democracy and Peace, the UNESCO Chair and International Network of Water-Environment Centers for the Balkans, the UNESCO C2c Center of Intergrated Water Resources Management and the “Iason” Programme,play an integral role in continually advancing the prestige of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Additionally, students can participate at AISEC programme, the largest international non-profit students’ organization that emphasizes on social issues and helps local communities develop a healthy and viable future through students’ practice and volunteering programmes.

School of Modern Greek Language

It offers Greek Language and Culture courses throughout the year (annual, 3 months, monthly, summer and long-distance), as well as special courses for Erasmus students, and other programmes such as the “Study Abroad” programme for American Universities’ students. Foreign employees of international organizations and Greek teachers who live and work abroad can also participate.

Lifelong Learning

The main purpose of the Aristotle University through operating the Lifelong Learning Courses, which were initiated in the spring of 2012, is to satisfy the increased needs of the Greek society for training, learning and specialization, now, more than ever.

Research Centers

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki includes a wide spectrum of units that support and enhance its educational, social and research role such as the Centre of Byzantine Research, the Institute of Modern Greek Studies, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies, the University Farm, the Medical, Dental and Veterinary Clinics, the University Forests, the Forest Botanic Garden, the Seismological Station, the Mount Olympus and Orliaka Grevena Meteorological Stations.

Museums, Archives, Collections

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki houses the following Museums, Archives and Collections, which include rare items that meet the teaching and research needs of faculty members and students. A large part of the material is available to visitors. Some of them are, the Teloglion Foundation of Art, the Casts Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Geology-Paleontology Museum, the Wildlife Museum, the Botanical Museum and the Zoology Museum.

Archaeological Excavation Projects

The excavation projects carried out by the Department of Archaeology and History of Ancient and Byzantine Art and Civilization of the School of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki have brought to light remarkable findings. They have contributed significantly to the progress of archaeological research, and have provided undergraduate and postgraduate students with extensive training in excavation methods.
